Let’s make Ontario’s roads your playground!
Passing Ontario’s G1, G2, and G tests requires preparation, focus, and a solid understanding of driving principles. Here’s a breakdown of students' most common mistakes at each stage and how to avoid them.
G1 Written Knowledge Test Mistakes
The G1 test evaluates your understanding of Ontario’s road signs and traffic rules. Common errors include:
Inadequate Preparation: Skimming the material instead of thoroughly studying the Official MTO Driver's Handbook.
Misunderstanding Questions: Misinterpreting multiple-choice questions or failing to read them carefully.
Rushing Through the Test: Not taking the time to double-check answers.
How to Avoid These Mistakes:
- Study the handbook thoroughly and take online practice tests to get familiar with the format.
- Read each question carefully before answering.
- Take your time—you’re not being timed!
G2 Road Test Mistakes
The G2 test assesses basic driving skills in real-world conditions. Common mistakes include:
- Traffic Signs and Signals: Failing to observe or follow stop signs, yield signs, or traffic lights.
- Lane Discipline: Drifting out of lanes or failing to maintain proper lane position.

- Mirror and Blind Spot Checks: Forgetting to check mirrors or blind spots during lane changes and turns.
- Improper Turns: Cutting corners, wide turns, or failing to signal.
- Parking and Reversing: Struggling with parallel parking or reversing into a space.
How to Avoid These Mistakes:
- Practice each skill multiple times, especially parking and turning.
- Learn and use proper mirror-checking and blind-spot techniques.
- Take mock road tests with a certified instructor to simulate real test conditions.
G Road Test Mistakes (Advanced Test)
The G test evaluates advanced driving skills, including highway driving and defensive techniques. Common mistakes include:
- Poor Merging and Exiting: Struggling to merge smoothly onto highways or exit at the correct speed.
- Inadequate Space Management: Not maintaining a safe following distance or cutting off other vehicles.
- Insufficient Hazard Awareness: Failing to anticipate or react appropriately to potential road hazards.
- Complex Situations: Difficulty navigating busy intersections or multi-lane highways.
- Lack of Defensive Driving Techniques: Not demonstrating proactive strategies to avoid accidents.
How to Avoid These Mistakes:
- Practice merging and exiting on highways with an experienced instructor.
- Stay alert to road conditions and anticipate the actions of other drivers.
- Learn advanced defensive driving techniques to handle complex situations confidently.

G1 License Policies
The G1 license is the first step in Ontario’s licensing system and is designed to help new drivers learn basic road rules under supervision.
Requirements to Get a G1 License:

- No highway driving on 400-series highways unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.
- Driving is prohibited between midnight and 5 a.m.

G2 License Policies
The G2 license is the intermediate stage, allowing drivers to practice driving independently with fewer restrictions.
Requirements to Get a G2 License:
- Hold a G1 license for at least 12 months, or 8 months if you complete an MTO-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course.
- Pass the G2 road test, which evaluates your basic driving skills.

- o After holding a G2 license for 6 months, up to 3 passengers aged 19 or younger are allowed during these hours.
- Ensure all passengers wear seatbelts, and the number of passengers cannot exceed the number of functioning seatbelts in the car.
Full G License Policies
The G license is in the final stage, granting full driving privileges with no GLS-related restrictions.
